In 1999, the 3.3 l A8 1994 was installed for the first time with a V8 TDI engine, followed in the new A8 by an improved 4.0 l chain driven engine. With the 4.2 l V8 TDI engine, the vee engine family with its 90 cylinder angle, 90 mm cylinder spacing and output end chain drive has undergone a complete overhaul.
