Audi has confirmed that the new five-door A1 Sportback light car will make its Australian debut in mid-2012, with pricing and specifications to be confirmed closer to launch. The A1 Sportback made its international market debut in Spain this week, entering as a more practical version of the existing three-door variant. The three-door has been on sale in Australia since late 2010. While both bodystyles share the same 3954mm length and 2469mm wheelbase, the five-door A1 benefits from a taller roofline, giving rear passengers great headroom. A start-stop system is also fitted as standard on all but the 1.6 litre TDI S tronic and the top-shelf petrol options. The 1.6 litre TDI is available in two states of tune, one producing 66kW and 230Nm of torque, and the other delivering 77kW and 250Nm. In entry-level 66kW form and paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the 0-100km/h run is covered in 11.6 seconds. Fuel consumption is listed at just 3.8 l/100km, bettering (just barely) the 3.9 l/100km of the MINI Cooper D. Audi says the 77kW version will hit 100km/h in 10.7 seconds, with fuel consumption also at 3.8 l/100km. A more powerful 105kW 2.0 litre diesel will hit the A1 line-up in the middle of the year, giving the diesel A1 a 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds and fuel consumption figures of 4.1 l/100km on the combined cycle.
