He funded the racing efforts of Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union (Audi) and encouraged them to create the most powerful and futuristic autos ever produced. These aerodynamic Grand Prix racers were designed to rule the racing world. To many, it is the golden age of Grand Prix racing but to some it was an ominous foreshadowing of how Germany would attempt to conquer the world with its machines. But the arrogant German racing effort would get its comeuppance from an Italian driver, Tazio Nuvolari, who beat them on their home turf in a "down-to-the-wire" race to the finish at the German Grand Prix.
